Hi everybody and welcome back to a new school year. As you may know, Catholic Campus Ministry has undergone some changes over the summer. Fr. Gerry and Jen are no longer with us, but we have been blessed with the presence of Fr. Ed in their absence. He will be our new Catholic Campus Minister. He will be on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will offer Mass these two days at 12:15PM. Please drop by to meet Fr. Ed and say hello.

June is almost over and here comes July; before you know it August will be over and we'll all be back at glorious UMass Boston! I'm trying to come up with things for the fall, so if you have any suggestions or comments let me know. Also tell me if there are any improvements we could make to the club compared to last school year. Keep enjoying the summer!

Black Waters

The oil continues to flow out into the gulf for more than a month after BP's Horizon disaster. It's true that it was an accident and such a risk is expected of oil rig platforms, and such accidents have happened before, but this could have been prevented and is already the biggest oil spill in history; even bigger than the Exxon Valdez. Even if it could not have been prevented too much time has passed and too much ecological and even economic damage has already been done. BP as well as the government have been rather slow to act. The fishing industry of the gulf coast, has been ravaged and who knows for how long it will last? This is also a threat for the consumer, because seafood from the area as well as the water could be hazardous to health. This is once again a sign that humanity needs to take more care of the environment and has to seek alternative energy resources that are less harmful to the environment.

Today begins the sporting eveent that unites the entire world: the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Everyone despite race, ethnicity, nationality, and their political views come together to celebrate a global event for the first time on African soil. This is a symbol of unity and a demonstration of the good side of humanity. For all you soccer fans, games will be transmitted on ESPN. Enjoy a month full of soccer! Despite that today is a joyous day, there was tragedy as well. Nelson Mandela's great-grandaughter died in a car crash returning from the opening concert yesterday night. We keep former President Mandela and his family in our prayers.

Israel's Flotilla Raid

Yesterday the Israeli military attacked and killed a humanitarian aid flotilla from Turkey, killing 9 civilians. The flotilla was trying to breach the blockade to Gaza, however the attacked occurred in international waters. The UN has condemned the act and has asked for an investigation into the matter. The U.S. has not really taken a stance on the issue, and rather has called for peace talks. Israel says that the flotilla had ties to Al-Queda but the Turkish government has rejected the statement.

This is definately a breach of not only international law, but also of human rights. Aid is being sent to the oppressed Palestinians in the Gaza strip and the Israeli army raids it and kills civilians in the process. The conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis has been a long and bitter one, both with their share of terror tactics and the only way to resolve this is give the Palestinians land and sovereignty.
